The Celje Regional Waste Management Centre (RWMC Celje) is a project aimed at providing a modern and environmentally friendly waste management solution. It is the first comprehensive waste management project in Slovenia. The project includes 24 municipalities of the Savinjska region which amounts to a total of 210,000 inhabitants, the facilities are dimensioned for 250,000 inhabitants.
The RWMC Celje facilities are present at two locations: in Bukovžlak (the composting plant for biodegradable waste, the sorting plant for separately collected fractions of waste, the bulky waste dismantling facility, THE LANDFILL FOR THE REST OF WASTE) and in the industrial zone of Trnovlje (the Celje District Heating Plant).
THE LANDFILL FOR THE REST OFWASTE itself is located south of the existing landfill for municipal waste in Bukovžlak, on a geologically and morphologically favourable terrain.
The watertight integrity of the terrain is ensured through a suitably sealed structure of the landfill’s base. The individual layers constructed from the bottom are the following: 30 cm of compacted clay, geosynthetic clay liner, JUNIFOL PEHD 2,5 mm (acc. to ÖNORM S 2073), 1200 g/m protective geotextile and 40 cm thick gravel drainage layer.
The RWMC Celje facilities in Bukovžlak were put into operation in June 2008.
