JUTA

GP PRIMER

JUTA GP® (quick drying) Primer is a low viscosity primer reduced with an aromatic hydrocarbon. It is black in colour and highly mobile. It is modified to provide improved damp substrate tolerance and membrane bonding relative to non-modified bituminous primers.

Product Benefits

  • Can be applied directly onto green concrete, masonry, metal and wood.
  • Drying performance at 30-60 mins is far superior to water-based systems or primers using aliphatic solvents.
  • Suitable for application in temperatures as low as freezing point.
Product Description

Uses

GP® Primer seals porous substrates and encourages the adhesion of bituminous waterproofing systems and sheet coverings. It may be applied successfully to a wide range of surfaces:

  • Concrete
  • Metals (mild steel, Zinc, Lead)
  • Lightweight concrete screeds
  • Asbestos cement
  • Slate

GP® Primer is available in 5 litre and 25-litre containers.

Handling and Storage

GP® Primer is not chemically sensitive to heat or cold but extreme temperatures should be avoided. The product should be stored in well-maintained storage tanks

Regulatory

All components are REACH (Reg. (EC) No 1907/2006) registered. The product does not contain any Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).

Toxicity and Safety

GP® Primer is classified as hazardous according to CLP Regulation (Reg. (EC) No 1272/2008). Refer to the Product Safety Data Sheet for recommended safety precautions. It is recommended the end-user wear safety glasses, safety gloves and protective clothing during application. Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes. Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling or using the product.

Application

All surfaces should be smooth, clean, sound and free from oil, grease, condensation and other contamination. Product may be applied to ‘green’ concrete and damp surfaces. The minimum ambient temperature for application is 0°C; it is not recommended to apply GP® Primer at temperatures below this as advertised drying times will not be achieved.

GP® Primer is recommended to be brush or roller applied, avoid pouring directly onto a horizontal surface. This may cause puddling during application and increase drying time. GP® Primer should not need to be thinned if recommended storage conditions have been maintained.

Coverage rates depend on porosity of surface:

  • Porous surfaces (e.g. concrete, wood): 6-8 m2/litre
  • Non-porous surfaces (e.g. steel): 11m2/litre

GP® Primer is designed to be effective as a single cost application.

If applying to metal, ensure the surface is well prepared in advance. Wire brush off any rust and ensure clean and dry. Where long-term protection is required, treat with a rust-inhibitive product. Consult the Technical Department for advice on compatibility prior to application if unsure.

Keep primed areas clean and dust-free so far as possible prior to membrane application. Areas that accumulate significant amounts of dust or dirt must be re-primed before the membrane application, bonding performance will be compromised by debris.

For cleaning tools use hydrocarbon-based solvent such as White Spirit. Xylene, Toluene and Acetone are also effective.

Ground Gas Standards

There are many different standards and guidance documents that detail how to understand the risk of ground contamination, and design solutions to mitigate these risks. The different documents relate to different ground contamination. Below are some of the key documents to be aware of and refer to:

BS 8485:2015+A1:2019 – Codes of practice for the design of protective measures for methane and carbon dioxide ground gases for new buildings.

  • Ground gases typically found near landfill sites, but can occur from other sources
  • Encourages the use of qualified installers
  • Validation to Ciria C735 is a requirement
  • Additional influences on the system should be considered, such as the hydrostatic conditions, and the likelihood of the source contaminant being in direct contact with the protective measures proposed
GP® PRIMER

BRE 211:2015 – Guidance on protective measures for new buildings. (RADON)

  • Naturally occurring ground gas. Larger concentrations in the South-West of UK
  • Minimum recommendation is a membrane of 300 micrometre (1200 gauge) polyethylene sheet or equivalent
  • It must be installed with considerable care and protected once installed
  • Taped laps are required
GP® PRIMER

CIRIA C748:2014 – Guidance on the use of plastic membranes as VOC vapour barriers

CIRIA C682:2009 – VOC Handbook

  • Risk-based approach
  • No quantifiable limits on material performance
  • Testing to ISO 15105-2 and EN 14414/EN 14415
  • 9 main VOC types are tested for
  • Welded laps are required as most tapes are made from bitumen/butyl and are affected by VOCs
GP® PRIMER

CIRIA C735:2014 – Good practice on testing and verification of protection systems to buildings from hazardous gases

  • Good practice on testing and verification of protection systems to buildings from hazardous gases
  • Check design and detailing is in accordance with site requirements
  • Checks the competency of the installer (NVQ LEVEL 2 minimum)
  • Test integrity of the membrane/barrier system
  • Visual inspection
  • Written report on inspection/testing and sign-off
